Dr. Barrett, now a Lake Oswego resident, brings decades of international performance and teaching excellence to this highly anticipated evening.
Throughout his illustrious career, he served as Professor of Clarinet at Northern Illinois University, where he mentored students who have gone on to perform with prestigious ensembles including the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, and pursued advanced degrees at institutions such as the Curtis Institute of Music, Yale University, and the University of Iowa.
A Buffet Clarinets Artist/Clinician, Dr. Barrett performed and taught throughout the United States and Europe, as well as in Australia, Canada, China, Israel, and Japan. His international career included a memorable performance with the Lahti Sinfonia Chamber Ensemble at Vienna’s renowned Musikverein. He is recognized as a specialist in Finnish clarinet music, with recordings “The Finnish Clarinet” and “Eliangelis” available on the ALBA label. His chamber ensemble arrangement of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s “Nachtlieder” received approval from the Finnish conductor and composer himself.
Dr. Barrett’s extensive performance experience included engagements with numerous orchestras across the United States, including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and regular performances with Chicago-area ensembles such as the Ars Viva Symphony Orchestra. As editor of music reviews for the International Clarinet Association, he contributed significantly to the clarinet community and was a frequent performer and presenter at International ClarinetFests.
An accomplished composer and arranger, Dr. Barrett’s works have been published by prestigious houses including Breitkopf & Härtel, Billaudot Éditeur, Edition Wilhelm Hansen, and OR-TAV Music Publications. His arrangements and compositions span from Jean Sibelius’s “En Saga Septet” to klezmer works for clarinet choir and wind band.
Dr. Barrett earned his Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University, where he studied with James Campbell, his Master of Fine Arts from SUNY-Buffalo with James Pyne, and his Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University with Clark Brody.
For this special concert, Dr. Barrett will perform with his neighborhood student-musician community of Lakeridge High School, including Percussion Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble, with select alumni joining the celebration.
