Mr. Hartley is in his twelfth year of teaching and is currently the Band Director at Lakeridge High School where he instructs the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab, Percussion Ensemble, Athletic Bands, Musical Pit, and teaches AP Music Theory. He also serves as the Tri-M Music Honors Society advisor and as the LHS Performing Arts Department Head.
In his free time Mr. Hartley plays Principal Trombone and serves on the Board of the Portland Wind Symphony. He is currently the President-Elect of the Oregon Band Directors Association (OBDA).
Prior to teaching at Lakeridge, Mr. Hartley taught at Kelso High School in Kelso, WA where he instructed the wind and jazz bands, percussion, orchestra, competitive marching band, and served as the District Music Coordinator for Kelso School District. During his time in Kelso, Mr. Hartley also served as the President of the Southwest Washington Music Educators Association (SWWMEA).
In 2017 Mr. Hartley was recognized as Kelso School District's Secondary Teacher of the Year. He was also a runner up for the 2019 Kelso/Longview Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year as well as a finalist for the 2021 Washington State Teacher of the Year.
Mr. Hartley earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Education (2013) and his Master of Music Education (2014) from the University of Oregon School of Music & Dance. He lives with his husband, André, and two cats, Gizmo and Gadget, in SE Portland.
